6/85 build Base model FB
« on: September 07, 2012, 01:07:01 PM »
Year: 1985
Make: Mazda
Model: RX-7
Price: $2200
Mileage: 111500
Color: Sunbeam Silver
Private or Dealer Listing: Private Listing
Location (US State/Canada/Int): MI

It's come to that time. I hate to do it, but with an impending move to the land of emissions testing at the end of the year, my FB must go. Here is a rundown:

1985 Mazda RX-7
111,510 miles (still driving it...mileage will be slightly higher than this when it's sold).
Base model (no sunroof)
Sunbeam Silver
Small bearing spindles in the front
LSD out of a Danish car, circa 1983. LSD had 76k on it when it was installed, chassis had ~98k.
Rebuilt 12a with ~300 miles on it
All chassis rust at the rear suspension mounting points fixed, reinforced with 1/8" plate. Drivers rear wheel well replaced with 16 gauge steel.

And so it begins....

All steel was mig-welded into place. Self-etching primer was used to seal the steel. Seams were sealed with 3M Fast-n-Firm seam sealer. 3 cans of Bondo brand rubberized undercoating was used to seal everything.

Front wheel bearings/races have ~3000 miles on them.
New rotors front and rear within the last 3000 miles.
Hawk HPS pads front and rear, installed within the last 3000 miles
SS flex brake lines in the front
New clutch hydraulics within the last 5000 miles
e-fan
FMOC
Full Energy Suspension bushing kit : Energy Suspension Bushings : Polyurethane Complete Kit For SA and FB

Rebuilt OMP with 10k on it.
MSD Blaster 2 Coils
NGK plug wires

Racing Beat SP Exhaust
Racing Beat springs front and rear
Tokico Illumina struts in the front
Tokico HP shocks (Blues) in the rear

15" x 7" +7 offset Enkei 92's. Gold centers.
Bridgestone Potenza RE-11's in excellent shape

A Fantastic Autocross Tire -- the Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 - Doc's advice on tires | Tire Rack

Old-school Racing Beat triangulated strut-tower brace
Exide Orbital deep cycle battery (850 cca)
Stock clutch/flywheel
New driveshaft universal joints within the last 3000 miles.
new Moog inner and outer tie-rod ends within the last 3000 miles

I have an uninstalled clutch that was given to me recently. This will be included. If I can find the SS flex line for the clutch hydraulics (ReSpeed) that is kicking around my garage, I'll include that as well.

The Bad:
Engine was either built with warped housings or they pinched the coolant seals. Engine leaks coolant out of the block. Does not burn any coolant.
Bad front main seal. Engine oil leak is almost non-existant with a bottle of Lucas HD Oil Stabilizer.
Clear coat has died.

If I wasn't planning on moving to California at the end of the year, I wouldn't sell her. My girlfriend is interviewing for post-doc positions on the west coast, so with the lack of any emissions equipment, the car must go. I won't be out of the rotary game long (planning on building a Locost (Lotus7 replica), RENESIS powered).

Price breakdown:

$2200 OBO as it is.
$2100 with Enkei wheels and no triangulated strut tower brace.
$1500 with factory wheels and tires and triangulated strut tower brace.
$1400 with factory wheels and tires and no triangulated strut tower brace.

Car is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Can deliver within reason, at buyers' expense. Car is sold as-is, with no expressed nor implied warranty.

Thanks for looking!

-Jim

Does the choke hold well?

Sounds like a pretty sweet deal, I would be all over this If I had more room and didn't already have enough projects to last me the rest of my life lol.

Good luck with the sale.

Chad-
I have not had it running in the dead of winter, so I can't respond to that.  I can tell you that you need to pull the choke, start the motor spinning, pump the gas once or twice, and it'll fire off, then push in the choke and keep it running at about 2k to warm it up.  The car is solid.  It also needs to either have a switch (which I have) wired up to turn on and off the electric fan, or a thermo switch installed.  I have replaced basically EVERY mechanical part under it in the past 18 months.  It will be getting new Drivers Front wheel bearings this coming weekend, as they started squeaking this past Saturday while I was out driving it.

Car is sold to Archie's (Aprillo at the 2011 Woodward Dream Cruise meet) friend Amkard.  It's off to Canada next week.
